Engineering For Children

PROGRAM OUTLINE 

Program Duration: 1 year (Tentative). 
Age group: 6 to 15.

The programme, “Engineering For Children” consists of three levels, with each level increasing the intensity of knowledge students learn. Each level has been designed to develop their ability to understand more complex topics, improve their critical and analytical thinking abilities and to improve their skills at communication and teamwork. As these are some of the most demanding real-life skills required by the present world and for children to learn this at this age, they will hopefully be way ahead of most of the people when they grow up to face the real world. 

The programme is just not a regular after school programme or an extracurricular activity, rather, we believe that this is about grooming children into becoming the next tech innovators from Bangladesh so that they can make tangible impacts on people’s lives and change the world for the better.

Level 1: Introduction to Programming, Electronics and Robotics

Duration: 4 months; Two – two hour long class/week. 

What will children learn in Level 1? 

Level 1 introduces students to the following topics giving them the basic knowledge on Programming, Electronics and Robotics and to help them understand more as they progress through the levels.

1. Microcontrollers: 

Here, children will get to know what microcontrollers are, different types of microcontrollers, I/O pins and their functions and how they work.

2. Sensors: 

Students will be working with sensors such as Ultrasonic, Light, Motion, Infrared etc. They will be taught basics of these sensors and how to code and operate them and how to analyse the collected data from that. They will also know where to use such sensors in practical applications. 

3. Applied Physics and Electronics: 

This field covers topics like LEDs, Motors (DC, Servo), different Integrated Circuits (IC’s) and Drivers, Voltage, Current, Resistors, LCD screens, Circuitry basics and connections etc. These are the core of robotics and electronics. Although it may look complicated, students are taught in a way they understand. 

4. Computer Science: 

Students get their introduction to Computer science topics such as Algorithms, Number systems and programming associated to microcontrollers. Different microcontrollers would require different programming languages and students are taught the ins and outs about that and all the syntaxes required to write programs. 

Level 2: Game and App Development

Duration: 4 months; Two – two hour long class/week. 

What will children learn in Level 2? 

Level 2 is more focused on the software side. Students get to work in the field of Game, Mobile and Web App development. This also engages them with analytical thinking and problem solving as they are required to solve different real-life problems with their idea and knowledge. The objective of the level is to have a 2D game created by each of the students.

Level 3: Final project

Duration: 4 months; Two – two hour long class/week 

What will children learn in Level 3? 

In this level, students will have to come up with innovative ideas that potentially solve any of the existing problems in any part of the globe or just simply can leave an impact on people’s lives. This can be based on any field of Engineering i.e Electronics, Computer Science or Robotics. Students may require to form small teams with their peers depending on their projects. The Tech Lab department of Education and department of R&D will be facilitating students throughout the process with the knowledge required for the accomplishment of the projects. 

After the successful completion of the final project, the student graduates and evolves into being an apprentice at the department of Education or at the department of Research and Development of The Tech Lab. 

How does this program help children? 

The year-long programme is designed in a way that beside learning about robotics, programming and electronics that are the core of the programme, students also get to develop other skills that help them with their academics and cognitive skill development. They will be prepared with a strong set of skills which they can apply at universities and further future in their career as well as at becoming the next tech innovators from Bangladesh. Although it may seem difficult for kids to understand, The Tech Lab has been best known to share knowledge in a way kids understand. 

The various fields of knowledge students will be learning from the programme are mentioned below, 

Physics 

Students will learn some topics on Light, Gravity, Sound, Waves, Force, Velocity, Torque and Acceleration. These will be taught when they start working on different projects. 

Mathematics 

Mathematics is an integral part of the programme and students will be taught specific topics such as variables, coordinate system, basic geometrical shapes etc. from Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry. The concepts will be explained in a way that it is not difficult for them to understand but help them understand the mathematics involved in programming, robotics and engineering. 

Computer Science

Algorithms, number system, boolean, computer architecture, digital logic and design, & programming in multiple languages will give students the much needed understanding in Engineering they need for the rest of their lives. As the future becomes more technologically dependent, this concepts will create quite a strong foundation for students in the field of Computer science. 

Electronics 

Students will get to learn about the ins and outs of DC circuitries. Concepts such as series-parallel connections, voltage, current, resistance, capacitance, ground, voltage and current divider, Ohm’s law, Kirchoff’s laws, equivalent resistance calculation, open and short circuits along with circuit designing and simulation are covered during lectures. 

Embedded systems and Communication Engineering 

Students get to work with different microcontrollers, single board computers, sensors and communication modules. 

Robotics: Sensors, Robot Movements, Artificial Intelligence (AI) 

Robotics being at the core of the programme gives students an understanding of the area. 

Critical, Analytical thinking & Problem solving competencies 

One of the The Tech Lab’s core values is that we provide students with situations where they are required to do critical and analytical thinking. They will be developing such skills throughout the programme, identifying problems and coming up with ways to solve them on their own. This is quite a crucial skill and as mentors, we provide them with an environment where they feel confident to be able to do so on their own. This empowers them over time and over the long run, hopefully it will help them tackle real-life situations much stronger.

There will be projects where students will be required to work in teams. This develops their social skills and coordination among other team members and improves their social and communication skills with people. At events organized by The Tech Lab, they also get opportunities to meet people from various backgrounds, exposing them to a whole variety of people. 

Presentation Skills & Public Speaking 

There will be instances where students will be asked to present their ideas over presentations either in report forms or through verbal presentations. During our various events, we invite students to come over and talk about their projects. 

Notes:

  • The program schedule may vary depending on students’ progress and the projects. 
  • All the learning materials/engineering equipment will be provided in the class by The Tech Lab. 
  • Parents/guardians can choose class timing for their child’s weekly classes from the available time-slots. 
  • Students will be given assignments/projects to work on at home and The Tech Lab educators will coordinate with them via required Online tools time to time. 
  • Parents/guardians will be provided with the report on their children’s progress after the completion of every level. 
  • We recommend every student to have a set of basic engineering components at home to practice. Upon confirmation by a parent/guardian, The Tech Lab will arrange that from their logistics vendors for that student. 
  • Tuition fee for every month has to be paid at the first scheduled day of the respective month. 
  • Payment can be made by account payee cheques in favour of “The Tech Lab Ltd.” or in cash providing a receipt of payment.
